A very special leopard
Usually leopards are described as shy, elusive and mostly active at night. For those reasons they are not easy to spot. But as safari guides will tell you, that’s not always the case. Not often, but sometimes a leopard -mostly females- seems to enjoy the company of humans, or perhaps rather the none-threatening vehicles they come in. This was certainly true for the leopard that we had the good fortune to follow for 10 years. We called her Miep.
Miep lived in Moremi Game Reserve, part of the Okavango delta in Botswana. For people who know the area a bit, her core territory was almost in the middle between Khwai and Dombo Hippo Pool on the Khwai river. Miep must have been very lucky, as there is permanent water, vast plains and lots of bush and trees. And lots of wildlife. So anything a leopard can wish for.
And Miep was one of these rare leopards that are not shy or elusive. And we can certainly testify to the fact that she seemed to like company, as on occasions we spent hours with her, sometimes showing off her tree climbing skills hopping from one tree to the next, or purring like and overgrown house cat.
The pictures below document 10 years of her life, from 2009, the year we first photographed her, to 2019, the year we last saw her.
We saw her the first time in 2009
2009
The second time in 2010 with her, we think, first offspring: Girly

We did not spot her in 2011, but saw her again in 2012, with another cub: Baby
2012
Baby
And we spotted her again in 2013, without cubs
2013
2014 Was a very good year as we saw her several times. With a new cub: Cub. We also saw Girly again, now 4 years old. Close to her mother’s territory

2015 We saw her again. No cubs.
2015
In 2016 we first spotted a cub on his own, which we later saw together with our leopard. As Miep was already getting on in age, we called the cub Bonus. And we spotted Cub, born in 2014, living on her own close to her mother’s territory
2016

and Cub at age 2
2017 Was a very wet year and we could hardly drive in the area Miep lived in. 2018 Was excellent again as we saw her multiple times
2018
2019 and 10 years after we saw her the first time turned out to be the last year we saw her. She shared a prey with what we think is one of her daughters. In 2020 COVID had the world in its grip and we couldn’t travel. In 2021 we learned from a guide that she was killed in a fight with hyenas.
